Ah, Venice – a thousand bridges, a thousand gondolas, a thousand photos … I love this place. I loved it last time in 1992, and it’s even better this time around. We have a remarkably accurate map (thanks Ian G) and have been able to wander a myriad of small streets, bridges and squares with no trouble. Biennale is on, and there are little exhibitions everywhere, you walk past, see something interesting, and pop in. We saw a church which is now a museum of 16th and 17th century musical instruments and, later on, some very funky modern furniture. Of course there are the churches, the boats, Piazza San Marco, the Grand Canal, the pizza, the gelati … did I mention I love Venice?
The apartment fronts onto a small street and is on the second floor. The kitchen is great and there is such a variety of food here after the sameness of the shops in Turkey. We hang out our washing Venetian style on a clothes line 2 storeys up overlooking the street, just as the locals do.
