Roaming in Rome

The dulcet tones of the acqua alta siren woke us again this morning at 6.30.  It’s not an “oh my god the city is flooding and you’re going to drown” type of siren, rather an “oh by the way there’s going to be a bit of water about, you might want to get your gumboots out of the cupboard” type.  Nevertheless we thought the best plan of action was to throw everything into our suitcases and run for it.

This plan worked well, except that there was no actual water to be avoiding.  Must have flooded other parts of Venice today.  So we boarded the very smooth and comfortable train for Rome.  The rain cleared after Florence and we got the views that Pete and Ilze missed.  There were a lot of flooded rivers as we neared Rome.  The skies cleared and it was warm again by the time we disembarked.

A quick visit was made to the Trevi Fountain to throw in the coins and ensure our return (do old Italian lira count?)

Three or more coins in the fountain

This may be our last chance to blog till we get home, so will post tomorrow’s story and photos later in the week.  Meanwhile stay tuned for Pete and Ilze’s continuing Italian adventures.
