The navigator in me loves a geographic landmark, so of course my final day in Rockhampton had to include a stop at the Tropic of Capricorn, marking the divide between the temperate and the tropic zones. Surprisingly, we needed a map to locate it. Once Rocky’s major/only tourist attraction, these days it sits rather unassumingly outside the Information Centre. I duly stood on either side of the line and satisfied my inner tourist. I can’t say I noticed a difference between the two sides of the divide.
Before that, we took a stroll along Quay Street and surrounds, which features some lovely historic buildings such as the Customs House, the Post Office and the Court buildings. The riverside parkland is being fixed up following the damage caused earlier this year by Cyclone Marcia. Being a Sunday, the centre of town was not exactly bustling, but at least it was easy to park the car.
It had rained overnight, quite heavily, and the blue skies of previous days have turned dull grey. The temperature has cooled down as well, helping me re-acclimatise as I journey southward. Journeying southward is going to take a bit longer than anticipated due to my flight being delayed 2 hours (: On the plus side, I have free internet and a voucher for the airport cafe. Woo hoo!
