Dunes

It’s a tough life … sleep in, leisurely breakfast on the lower deck, watching the water and the fishing boats, and hearing the geese honking as they fly overhead in their V formations.  Head off around midday to the Model event, designed to show us Dune country.  Meander happily through lovely pine forest, visiting controls at will and trying to figure out depressions and mounds.  Follow a black sand track across a sand dune and pop out on the beach.  I’m looking at the Tasman Sea, and it feels like I can see forever.

Further down, the control is easily spotted by the two dozen orienteers up on the ridge, taking photos.  It is mapped as being at the top of the cliff.  There is only one way for me to get there – a vertical clamber on hands and knees through the soft sand.  There are cheers when I finally emerge on the ridge.  The view is spectacular. You’ll just have to take my word for it.

Later, an evening stroll around Shelly Beach, which has been busy with day trippers.  Retire to the lower deck for drinks and to shake the dunes from my shoes.

Here are some more photos from Shelly Beach.  Goodnight.
