Friday 30/3. Altitude 1260m 5C.
We decided to go for a drive to the top of Mt Wellington this morning as a our races didn’t start until after 1.00pm.
Getting to the top had seen the temperature fall to 5C and with a 35 knot breeze it brings the wind-chill factor to minus plenty C. Both of us were wearing shorts as it seemed like a good idea at the time so we took two indifferent photos and bolted back to the car and took off to the event.
It was to be a Sprint distance event at the University of Tasmania on Sandy Bay Road.
For more than 25 years this carnival has been known as the Australia 3 Day and mostly held at Easter. We used to have a Prologue or Warm-up event on the Friday as people can still be traveling. But the PTBs got involved and made the Prologue a major event for the Elite and NOL orienteers. (don’t bother to ask.) So then it became a 4 Day, except that the first day is now the Prologue and the second day is still Day 1. and the Warm-up event is held on Thursday and is Day -1. Day one results only count in the overall for the Elites, the rest of us our 3 Day results don’t start counting until day 2. Simple? Unless your from one family from QLD who decided that they didn’t want to compete in the Warm-up event yesterday and booked their accommodation and travel to arrive in time for the next event (which is now the Prologue (and really day 1) and therefore came one day (don’t know which 1 day that is) late and missed the start of the Aust 3 Day. (Pick any 3 of the 5 Days.) Someone just seemed to think it was a good idea. Perhaps they were wearing shorts on the top of Mt Wellington one day and suffered brain damage.
It was a good event, went as well as could be expected and in keeping with tradition Max ran on the wrong stick.
As I write, results are still up in the air. There were an unusually higher than expected number of Missed punches (Ilze had 4, and at least one replaced control so I don’t know if we have valid results.
Pete had a good solid run after a slow start and had a split print of 34 mins plus, went and changed, had lunch then went over to the results board to find out I was now 1 hour 22 mins and still going up. They still had me out on the course and I had to physically present myself to the results tent to prove I was back.
We all have to check “Eventor” later.
Pete.
