YORK MINSTER.

In AD 71 the Romans founded a fortress at Eboracum the ruins of which can be seen in the Undercroft of York Minster.

250 years later Constantine was declared Emperor in that same fort on top of which now stands this wonderful building.

Why is this really relevant? Because 100 years later the Roman Emperor Justinian began building the only other building into which I have entered and paused, stunned.  The Aya Sophia in Istanbul then named Constantinople after Constantine who had stood in this very spot.

Ilze may find more words to say than that.

I think it is enough.

After lunch, we visited a Roman Bath,  wandered more medieval streets climbed to a tower on a hill and played with owls in a park.

How wonderful to get so close to such a magnificent creature. And I don’t mean Pete in his helmet …
