A Meander Around Morschach

This morning we opened the blinds. The mountains had gone. The rain had arrived. We closed the blinds, looked at the radar, and declared it a rest day.

Washing, emails, tidying, lazing around watching the rain, and the mountains come and go as the clouds drifted in and out.  Most of the activities here are outdoor based. The only road south, into the higher Alps, is closed, necessitating long detours. Besides, I’ve been told to have a rest day every so often. So I did.

Finally just after 5pm, the rain stopped. We donned jackets and headed out for a quick stroll around the village of Morschach. I learned that it first appeared in documented records way back in 1203! Its clifftop location was apparently ideal for agriculture, and farms sprang up on the sloping meadows.

Today it boasts a church, a shop, several restaurants and cafes, plenty of guest houses, and the Swiss Holiday Park, where you can do anything from pony rides to go-karts to indoor bowls. The water park seems to be the most popular feature.  Unconfirmed rumours suggest there is a permanent orienteering course, but it was getting a bit too dark to explore that option.

I wandered into the small strip of forest across the road. It hugs the clifftop and hides a walking path that follows the lake for miles. From this vantage point I could see the tunnels and the switchback road leading up from Brunnen.

Then it rained some more. We came home.

Here is what we saw.
