Last time we came to Corfu, we went to the Kanoni Causeway and watched jet planes roar in to land right over our heads. On the bus ride back, I’d spotted the Old Fortress and thought it looked interesting. So today’s plan was to pay it a visit. Today’s plan also included a walk along the waterfront to the old windmill, but the blasting heat put paid to that, as did the fact that footpaths in Corfu are hard to come by. We followed the coast road from the cruise port to the Faliraki lookout. It was tempting to jump into the sea; we were dripping already, and I was struggling with the uneven paving and the traffic.
The grounds of the Old Fort were very open, and there was not much shade or seating. I was wilting by now, and seriously questioning my sanity. Finally we found a stone step next to a shaded wall, and sat for a while.
The lookout seemed a long way up, via a series of ramps and steps. The marble paving was slippery. There was a handrail in places, but it disappeared in sections – no OH&S here. Fortunately the 360 degree view was worth it.
Leaving the fort, we sat in more shade in Spianada Square. I knew there was a gelato shop nearby which had a selection of gluten free flavours. We found it just behind the Liston colonnades. I had mixed berry, and Ian had papaya. It was blissfully freezing as it slid down, and magically restorative. It gave me just enough energy to walk to the bus station, and board the bus back to the ship. On board during dinner, we watched the Albanian coastline slide by – the closest we will get to it.
