Bella Trieste

We’ve adopted the eminently sensible Mediterranean habit of siesta, followed by pre-dinner passegiata (evening stroll).  Last night we passegiata’d to the Molo Audace, or pier, to see the sunset, and the lights of the Piazza.  Most of Trieste was doing the same; the outdoor cafes were buzzing.  We retreated to eat our chicken schnitzel (gluten free crumbs – Ian has been spoiled for choice here) and salad, followed by chocolatta gelato.

Today was our last full day here, and we wanted to acquaint ourselves with the location of the central bus station, in preparation for our bus trip to Ljubljana tomorrow.  En route we took in some of the Roman ruins just a short stroll from our apartment.  It never ceases to amaze me how the Italians just dig stuff up every time they knock something down.

On the way back we visited the Sunday trash and treasure market at the Grand Canal (trash to treasure ratio probably 100:1).  We found the Piazza Borsa with its elegant array of buildings.  Then I detoured back to the Molo Audace to photograph a lovely sculpture that caught my eye last night – the sewing ladies of Trieste.  I’ve seen that same level of focus on Ilze’s face many times as she crafts something amazing.

We are once again taking siesta.

Now all I need is to find such a wonderful spot to do some needlework! And I have Victorinox scissors.
