Bearing up in the Bering Sea

It was a wild ride over night. A storm hit us in the late afternoon and by dinner time it was 35knot winds and a 3 metre swell . Attendance at dinner was much reduced. Ilze had taken her pills and was bearing up but they made her very drowsy and with a loss of appetite. This was thoughtless of her as I now had to finish off my birthday cake alone.

The swell subsided  over night and  we continued south east towards our first point of landing on  St Mathews Island, an uninhabited speck in the Bering Sea. We were up by 7.30am to prepare our gear but although the sea was now dead flat we were now surrounded by fog and morning landings are off till at least midday. Ilze and I hung around on the upper deck gazing at the empty zodiacs lurking in the fog.  Our landing slot was to be 2.15pm so it is looking doubtful if we will get to go.

And we didn’t, it has now gone 3.00pm and we are still fog bound so it is all off. Here are a few photos  of what we missed.

We are currently off to the Aleut Comminity in the Pribilof Islands (where ever they are)  and hope for better visibility tomorrow.
