Reality Check

Well of course harsh reality set in today.  We were back in detailed mining terrain for the final event of Easter.  Our Information “tent” was inside a hall – luxury.  The sun shone and all was right with the world.

Out on the course, I quickly realised that the mining features were low to the ground, and the surrounding vegetation was higher.  I blundered around for a while hunting down my first control, which was next to a mound that was no more than knee high.  I fared little better on the second – looking for a small watercourse in an area that was full of small watercourses. The flag was half buried in a bush.  By now I was thinking I was in for a long day at the office.

Fortunately things improved from there.  The terrain opened out and the features became readable.  We had pits, mounds and small channels to find, but none of them presented me with any problems.  However the damage was done and I was back to 7th place, my glorious result destined to be a one-off.  Oh well, at least I have a nice memory – and more granite terrain next weekend to look forward to, when we are back up here to do it all over again.

Ian, conversely, had his best run of the weekend, so finished on a good note.  Pete also completed his 3 days without mispunching; another Easter 3 day completed.  This is his last year in M75.

The finish was certainly picturesque – a giant corflute Easter egg set against the backdrop of the gorgeous old church in Tarnagulla’s main street. A nice way to end the carnival.

Afterwards I was back on the mike, announcing the medal winners.  Then back to our splendid residence for a celebratory dinner, a sleep in, a big pack, and a long drive home.  Now we have 2 days to prepare for another hectic weekend, another night at home, then it’s finally time to go cruising!
