Ian’s Hadrian’s Wall Walk Day 3, Banks to Cawfields

Heading into the middle sections of the walk, the landscape continued to get more scenic with few on-road sections.  The drawback was it also got a lot hillier and quite steep in parts, as the wall – and the walk – followed a significant line of crags that run through the area.  I also crossed from Cumbria back into Northumberland county as I passed through the hamlet of Gilsland.

Staying on the ridgeline tracks meant a lot more climbing up then down, then up again, as you crossed each gap.  This really slowed my pace on what turned out to be the hottest day so far.  So I called a halt earlier than expected with only about 19 km completed and 408m of total ascent.  Still walked for just over 6 hours.

65 km down and 80 km to go.  Next leg will cross the halfway point and go through the famous Sycamore Gap.
