ROLLING UP THE CARPET.

Just a quick blog from Peter and Ilze who have arrived in Venice for “one last time”

It was supposed to be party time, the Biennale, the Venice Street Orienteering Race a real knees up and “Roll out the barrel”.

We arrived at the Palazzo Lezze in Cannaregio  at 12.30pm today after a largely uneventful flight from Melbourne via Singapore and Milan. The train trip from Milan to Venice was also uneventful once we found the ticket office at Milan Central (Its down about 3 levels from the main platform) and the lovely Guillia sorted out our 6 day rail pass. Our train was delayed due to track work but then hurtled off at a brisk 214kph and deposited us at Venice Santa Lucia where we were greeted with a grey and slightly damp day improved by the complete absence of Cruise ships now banned from  the laguna.

Then followed a quick visit to our favourite supermarket in a converted theatre for a drool and then back to the Coop (once the Billa) for the more reasonable prices and then home via the handbag shop for another quick drool.

We decided on a quick nap before tackling the Italian plumbing and electrics in the kitchen (you unplug the washing machine to plug in the kettle) and had just woken up when we received a frantic call from the lovely owner Filippo, ” could he please come round and roll up the big carpet and rescue the spare linens from under the bed as there may be some water come into the apartment tomorrow?”.

Its accqua alta at 10.30am, possibly a record but it has never come in in his life time but there have been three entries recorded since 1832.

So goes life on the Venetian canals.

Wonderful.

Pete

More pictures tomorrow. These were from a couple of years ago.

How will you tell the difference between the acqua alta alarm and your phone??

If feet wet it’s acqua alta – if feet dry it’s your phone.
