A long travel day with not much to note as we made the familiar trip up the Hume Freeway, ticking off the exits. Sadly it was too warm for the traditional pie stop at Holbrook. We just kept driving until the petrol ran low, at Goulburn. It is always fun to see the Big Merino – but that wasn’t the day’s highlight. At Goulburn, we left the freeway, and took to a series of back roads to cross over to the coast. These small roads saw us climbing, traversing and descending a series of escarpments. The first of these featured sub-alpine vegetation; I hadn’t realised we were that high up. We saw classic NSW sandstone pagodas; then the vegetation grew thicker as we drew nearer to the coast.
But it wasn’t the scenery that brought us to a voluntary stop and a double back (there was an enforced stop of 6 minutes while we waited at a roadworks traffic signal, on a deserted stretch of road; something of an overkill). Ian spotted Wusty the Wombat (who may or may not be related to Warren the Wombat of Winfinite Wisdom). He blinked, shook his head, and turned the car around to make sure he had really seen what he thought he had!

Finally we arrived in Sanctuary Point, a quiet holiday retreat that reminds us of a larger version of Corinella – a mishmash of housing styles, a boat ramp, and a nice little park fronting the inlet; great for swimming, canoeing or boating. We look forward to exploring Jervis Bay over the next few days.
