It was a gloomy, misty morning, after a big clap of thunder and a heavy downpour.  Unsure that we’d see anything at all, nevertheless we set off to explore the two neighbouring islands, Stremoy and Eysturoy.  The link between our island of Vagar, and the neighbouring island of Stremoy, is a rather impressive subsea tunnel.

It rains A LOT here, which means there are hundreds and hundreds of waterfalls. They are everywhere.  Which means lots of stopping.  Distances are not great in the Faroes, but it takes a long time to get anywhere because you just have to pull over and take a photo, around every corner.

We spent the day driving to several small villages – Saksun, Eidl and Gjov.  The road between Eidl and Gjov was truly dramatic, passing the highest mountains in the Faroes.  Although the mist had lifted, and we even had some welcome sunshine in Gjov, the peaks were still shrouded in cloud.

We returned to home base in time to witness The Eclipse, which was supposed to be 91% coverage here.  As far as we were concerned it was a complete fizzer – the fog had descended again so we had no idea where the sun was; we expected to have a few minutes of darkness, but it was imperceptible. I hope eclipse watchers in other places had better luck.
