We like to plan “rest days” roughly once a week – a chance to sleep in, do the laundry, catch up on correspondence, and generally hit the Pause button. With more rain forecast, today seemed the right day.
However, we needed to pick up a few odds and ends at the supermarket at the other end of the village, so we decided a mid afternoon walk was in order. We followed the towpath beside the Huddersfield Narrow Canal as it passes through Uppermill. The entire canal runs for 32 km from Huddersfield to Greater Manchester, and features 74 locks and the famous Standedge Tunnel. Our walk was about 3 km each way.
Here is what we saw on the way to Tesco and back:
- A very large and impressive 23-arch railway viaduct (at the bottom of the steep hill that we live near the top of)
- A number of locks
- A flotilla of ducks
- A pirate ship, complete with scary skeleton
- Stepping stones
- Stone walls
- Lots of lovely reflections
- A narrowboat
- A marina full of narrowboats
- A thing for lifting narrowboats out of the water
- A monument high on a hill
- An old chimney beside the water
- A rival to Bunnings
- Alas, we did not see any humped pelicans at the crossing (or anywhere else)
Who knew.
The village to our north is called Diggle. I am not making this up.
Oh, and I bought some excellent chocolate chip cookies for afternoon tea.
